Top 10 Things to Do in Jabalpur for Couples

Ten real things to do in Jabalpur for couples, from the full moon boat at Bhedaghat to sunset at Madan Mahal, plus where you can actually stay.

7 min read

You have a free Saturday, a shared budget that is smaller than you would like, and a growing suspicion that you have already been to the same mall four times this month. That is the situation this list is written for.

These are things to do in Jabalpur for couples that hold up on an actual day out rather than in a photo grid. Most of them are outdoors and most of them cost very little. A few need a season, so check that before you plan around them. One important practical point sits at the bottom of this page and is worth reading before you book anything.

1. The full moon boat ride at Bhedaghat

This is the standout, and nothing else in the district is close. On full moon nights in the cooler months, boats run through the marble gorge after dark. The cliffs are pale rock, the water is black, and the reflected light is genuinely strange to sit inside.

Get to Panchvati Ghat well before moonrise. Sharad Purnima is the most crowded night of the year by a distance, so if you want quiet, pick any other full moon between roughly October and March. Full detail on how the boats work is in the Bhedaghat marble rocks guide.

Cost: low. Season: October to March. Time: a half day including the drive out.

2. Sunset from Madan Mahal Fort

A small Gond period fort on a rocky hill inside the city, reached by a short climb. The fort itself takes ten minutes to walk around. The reason to go is the last half hour of light, when you can see most of Jabalpur laid out below and the granite around you turns orange.

The Balancing Rock is close by, a boulder sitting on a point of rock that survived a serious earthquake without moving. It is a five minute stop and a good one.

Arrive around forty minutes before sunset. Wear shoes you can climb in. Come down before it gets fully dark, since the path is uneven and unlit.

Cost: almost nothing. Season: all year, best October to February. Time: two hours.

3. Evening aarti at Gwarighat

The Narmada at Gwarighat, at sunset, with the aarti and diyas going down on the water. It is a properly local scene and not a staged one.

Sit on the steps, get chai, take a short boat out if you feel like it. It is busiest on weekends and on festival days. Dress respectfully, keep your voices down during the aarti, and if you are buying a diya to float, buy it from one of the small vendors on the steps rather than the first person who approaches you.

Cost: free, or the price of a diya and chai. Season: all year. Time: an evening.

4. Bargi Dam and the backwaters

Roughly 40 km from the city, the Narmada backs up behind Bargi dam into a very wide, very quiet sheet of water. There are boats, including longer cruise trips, and the sunset over open water is the sort of thing Jabalpur is not supposed to have.

Go in the second half of the afternoon and stay for the light. Check boat operations on the day, since they change with water levels and season.

Cost: low to moderate depending on the boat. Season: all year, best after monsoon. Time: a half day.

5. Dumna Nature Reserve Park

Out near the airport, a large stretch of forest with a lake, walking and cycling tracks, a deer enclosure and a small toy train. It is the closest thing to a proper walk in the woods that you can reach from the city in half an hour.

Go early. It gets warm and the animals stop cooperating by mid morning. There is a modest entry ticket, and cycles are usually available inside.

Cost: low. Season: all year, best in winter. Time: three hours.

6. A slow evening in Vijay Nagar

Not everything has to be an expedition. Vijay Nagar on the eastern side of the city is where the cafes, the malls and the multiplexes are concentrated, and on a wet evening in August it is the correct answer.

Coffee, a film, and food that arrives at the table. It costs more than the ghats and there is nothing wrong with that once in a while, particularly if the alternative is standing in the rain.

Cost: moderate. Season: all year. Time: an evening.

7. The climb to Pisanhari Ki Madiya

A Jain temple complex on a hill, reached by a long flight of steps. The story attached to it is that a woman funded its construction from what she earned grinding grain, which is a better reason to climb than the view, though the view over the city is the reward.

Do it in the early morning or the late afternoon. Not at midday, not in May.

Cost: free. Season: all year, avoid peak summer. Time: two hours.

8. A quiet afternoon at the museum and a garden

The Rani Durgavati Museum holds sculpture, coins and material on the region’s history, including the Gond period that shaped this part of Madhya Pradesh. It is small, air conditioned, and takes about an hour and a half at a slow pace.

It closes one day a week and on public holidays, so confirm before travelling. Pair it with a walk in one of the city gardens afterwards for a low effort, low cost afternoon that works even in bad weather.

Cost: very low. Season: all year. Time: three hours.

9. A monsoon waterfall run

Between July and September the district’s seasonal waterfalls come alive. Dhuandhar at Bhedaghat is the easy one, with parking, a market and a ropeway, and it is enormous when the Narmada is full.

The rougher options are further out and need a vehicle, a full day and some sense. If you are considering those, read the Nidan waterfall guide first, particularly the part about not swimming. Wet basalt is slippery in a way that photographs never convey.

Cost: fuel. Season: July to September only. Time: a full day.

10. Eating late, properly

Jabalpur handles late night better than most cities its size. After a film or a long drive back from Bhedaghat, there is food to be found well past the hour most kitchens shut.

This is a genuinely nice way to end a day rather than a filler. Ask at your hotel desk which places near you are still serving, because it changes through the year.

Cost: low. Season: all year. Time: an hour.

The part most lists leave out

Every list of things to do in Jabalpur for couples stops here, with the day planned and the evening sorted. The harder half is that couples still get turned away at hotel reception desks, usually with a vague line about policy, and usually after the ride there.

We think that is a rubbish way to treat people, so we will say our position plainly. Hotel E Square accepts unmarried couples, and we accept local IDs. Both properties, no negotiation at the desk, no awkward conversation in front of a lobby full of people. Every hotel in Madhya Pradesh has to record a government photo ID for each guest and we do that too, but a Jabalpur address on your ID is not a reason to refuse you a room. The full policy is written out on our couple friendly hotel page so you can read it before you arrive rather than find out at the counter.

Two practical notes on top of that. If you need a room for part of the day rather than a full night, ask about day use rooms, which is a common and completely ordinary booking. And book by message ahead of time so the room is confirmed before you set out.

We run two properties in Vijay Nagar, at Ahinsa Chowk and Ekta Chowk, 16 air conditioned rooms between them, with covered parking, free Wi-Fi, CCTV in the common areas and reception staffed 24 hours. The kitchen serves till 4 AM. We have been at this over eight years and sit at 4.7 across roughly 1,400 Google reviews.

Rates move with the season and with availability, so we quote them live on a message rather than publish a number that is wrong by next month. Have a look at the rooms and what is in them, then send us your dates.

Frequently asked

Are there couple friendly hotels in Jabalpur that accept local ID?

Yes, though not as many as there should be. Hotel E Square accepts unmarried couples and accepts local IDs at both its Vijay Nagar properties, at Ahinsa Chowk and at Ekta Chowk. Every hotel in Madhya Pradesh is required to record a government photo ID for each guest, so carry yours, but a local address on it is not a reason for us to refuse a booking.

What is the most romantic thing to do in Jabalpur?

The moonlit boat ride through the marble gorge at Bhedaghat, on a full moon night between roughly October and March. The cliffs are pale rock and the moonlight coming off them over black water is the reason the place is known at all. Reach the ghat well before moonrise because the queue builds quickly.

Can couples visit Jabalpur on a small budget?

Easily. Gwarighat, Madan Mahal Fort, Pisanhari Ki Madiya and most of the ghats cost nothing, and the Bhedaghat boat and the nature reserve are inexpensive. Realistically, transport and food will be the bigger part of your spend rather than entry tickets.

Where can couples go in Jabalpur in the evening?

Gwarighat for the Narmada aarti around sunset, Madan Mahal Fort for the view over the city just before dark, or the cafes and malls around Vijay Nagar if the weather is poor. In the cooler months the ghats stay pleasant well into the night.
